GodTube, the popular YouTube-clone for the religious, might be ready to make a broader move into social networking. According to a video posted to the site, GodTube is making a name change, and “becoming a hybrid of Facebook, MySpace, and YouTube.” The site will still be faith-based, but moving beyond video sharing to include other social networking features.
The site is a fairly blatant clone of YouTube, but marketed towards the faith-based community. In fact, it initially launched using a $300 script that anyone could buy. But the site grew gangbusters, and the company raised $30 million last year to expand. Traffic growth has since cooled off though – according to Quantcast, GodTube has shrunk from a peak of 2.7 million monthly visitors to just 692,000 last month.
Perhaps the declining usage is the reason the site wants to offer a broader feature set. The initial success of GodTube – a site with little differentiation other than its target audience – demonstrates the demand for faith-based online community. Doing the same with the proven features of Facebook and MySpace should give the site a boost.
No word on what the new name of GodTube might be – we’ve contacted the company for additional details and will update if we hear something. Here’s the video report of the change:
